Members in Europe plan a meeting in May Through the good offices of the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires in Strasbourg, the European membership of the Society is in the process of organizing itself into a "section" - the formal relationship of this new creature to the Society itself is unprecedented, and as yet undefined - and plans a meeting entitled "Laser-Solid Interactions and Transient Thermal Processing of Materials," to be held in Strasbourg May 25-27. First Vice President C.W. "Woody" White has served as liaison with the European materials scientists who are organizing the meeting, and will serve as the MRS's representative at the meeting, whose sponsors are interested in attracting contributors and participants from outside as well as within Europe. A co-chairman of the European section, P. Siffert of the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires, said it was essentially "the success of the meetings organized in the U.S.A. by the Materials Research Society" that led he and his colleagues "to organize a meeting devoted to currently interesting problems on materials science and technology in conjunction with" the MRS. He indicated the meeting is only the first in what his group conceives of as a regular series of meetings in Europe, organized by a body that would have a formalized existence within the MRS. The other co-chairmen of the meeting are P. Pinard of INSA at Lyon and Nguyen Van Tran of CNET at Grenoble.
"The intent of the symposium is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for scientists engaged in the use of lasers, electron beams, microwaves, incoherent light and other transient sources for the investigation of the fundamental aspects - as well as the possible applications - of transient thermal processing of materials," Siffert said. Contributions Solicited Contributions are solicited in the following areas: fundamentals of lasersolid interactions; kinetics of recrystallization; impurity behavior under rapid recrystallization; defects; crystallization of thin-films on amorphous substrates; silicides and surface alloys; and applications to VLSI, photovoltaics and metallurgy. Abstracts of not more than one page are due by April 1, and should be sent to Siffert at the following address: Centre de Recherches Nucleaires Laboratoire PHASE 67037 Strasbourg Cedex France The telephone number is (88) 28 65 43. The telex number is 890032 CNRS CRO. An international steering committee has helped organize the meeting, and it comprises: A. Nulanstad, University Aarhus, Denmark; O. Malmros, Topsil, Frederikssund, Denmark; F. Saris, FOM, Amsterdam; E.F. Krimmel, Siemens, Munich, Germany; D. von der Linde, University Essen, Germany; M. von Allmen, University Bern, [Continued on Page 12]
