Medical education is changing. The way we teach students, residents, fellows, and faculty has evolved over the past decade, and teaching practices that endured for centuries are being replaced or retired. This evolution is informed by advances in cognitive psychology and by evidence from a growing body of medical education research. Awareness of how medical education theory and practice is changing is critical for pulmonary and critical care specialists to understand how to best teach our learners in the classroom, in the clinic, on the consult service, and in the intensive care unit. There is now greater emphasis on learner engagement and involvement in teaching and learning.
