Medication causes 10% of lower urinary tract symptoms in men Common prescription medicines including antidepressants, antihistamines, bronchodilators, anticholinergics, sympathomimetics and diuretics account for 10% of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men, suggest findings of a Kaiser Permanente study.1 The study included data on 63 579 men aged 45–69 years between 2002 and 2003 who were enrolled in the California Men’s Health Study (CMHS). The six medication classes studied were all associated with LUTS in unadjusted analyses. After adjustment for region, age and race/ethnicity, the strongest association with LUTS was seen with bronchodilators (odds ratio 1.22; 95% CI 1.15, 1.29) and antidepressants (1.39; 1.32, 1.47). Men without benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were more likely to have LUTS associated with the study medications, particularly sympathomimetics, diuretics and antidepressants. The study researchers estimate that antihistamines, bronchodilators, diuretics and antidepressants account for approximately 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% of LUTS, respectively. Kaiser Permanente’s Dr Melanie Wuerstle, lead author of the study, says it is a common misconception that LUTS are solely due to BPH.2 She says the study highlights the importance of considering medications in the differential diagnosis of LUTS. Dr Wuerstle recommends that "when necessary, doctors should consider changing the medications which may be causing LUTS before adding new medications or invasive therapy." 1. Wuerstle MC, et al.
