Modafinil use not shown to exacerbate seizures Modafinil use does not appear to be associated with exacerbation of seizures when examined over "a wide variety of neurological conditions", say researchers from the US in their study presented at the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society. They used a centralised clinical registry to identify patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy who received modafinil during the period January 1999–August 2009; 156 patients were selected for analysis. The most common aetiology for underlying seizures was brain tumour (n = 33), while 23 patients had epilepsy without other symptomatic brain injury. A total of 68 patients had seizures while receiving modafinil, but in all these patients except 4, it was not considered that modafinil contributed to an exacerbation. Seizures occurred only after modafinil was started in another 3 patients, but in 2 of these modafinil had been discontinued prior to seizure onset. No patients exhibited clinical exacerbation of seizures while taking modafinil, and the addition of modafinil was not shown to exacerbate seizures even in patients receiving antiepileptic polytherapy, say the researchers. They conclude that modafinil "appears to be safe, and may potentially be used in patients with epilepsy and fatigue". Artsy E, et al.
