First Preface: Ear Reconstruction in the Twenty-First Century

Personal History In 1950, a month after my sixth birthday, my father died at age 42. He was an obstetrician whose early death occurred in the exact middle of the twentieth century. Surgical practice has changed markedly in the last 70 years. I often wonder what my father would think if he could see today’s operating suite. Indirectly, his death gave me a connection to ear reconstruction. Growing up in a fatherless home with two younger sisters, my mother felt that I needed male influence in my life and enrolled me in a boy’s boarding school in the eighth grade. The education I obtained was superior to that in my local high school and facilitated my early acceptance to Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Before my graduation from high school, I saw
