Montelukast Lack of drug effect: case report

A 10-year-old boy exhibited a lack of drug effect during treatment with montelukast for vernal keratoconjunctivitis. The boy, who had a significant medical history for atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma from early childhood. Also, he had an allergy to storage and house dust mites. He had his first ocular symptoms at the age of five years. Thereafter, he received various treatments, and subsequently, he was diagnosed with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Therefore, he was commenced on unspecified topical corticosteroids and antihistamines, he also received unspecified oral antihistamines and montelukast [route and dosage not stated]. However, his symptoms did not recover. His eye symptoms were controlled with unspecified systemic corticosteroids. He was advised not to take treatment with immunomodulators, as he had a corneal ulcer. Therefore, the boy started receiving treatment with omalizumab. Subsequently, his treatment with ocular and systemic treatment with corticosteroids was stopped 9 and 10 months later. Thereafter, he continued to receive treatment with omalizumab, bilastine, olopatadine and montelukast. He had mild and inactive conjunctivitis. Limao R, et al.
