INSIDER/OUTSIDER PERSPECTIVES Outsider Perspective: Sharon Vegh Williams When I entered the teaching profession, I had little knowledge of, or experience with Native communities. At that time, I lived in a racially, economically, and culturally diverse neighborhood in a large east coast city. The neighborhood schools where I worked reflected this diversity. Although I grew up in a relatively homogenous, middleclass suburb, I had always been drawn to issues of diversity and multiculturalism. This was certainly influenced by my grandparents, all of whom were religious Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Through my family’s positive religious and cultural identification, I felt deeply rooted in my own ethnic identity. At the same time, I struggled w
