Preface
Laparoscopic surgery and colorectal diseases are a perfect match. Techniques to lessen incision size have been shown to decrease wound infection, incisional hernia, and postoperative pain requirements. All good things for patients and our healthcare system. Intracorporeal anastomoses (IC) lessen incision size and, in some cases, avoid the extraction incision entirely. IC is not new, but as minimally invasive surgeons become more adept at complicated techniques, there has been much more interest in pursuing IC. This surge in interest in IC is the basis for this book. Many different techniques exist for IC. I have assembled some of the world’s experts in IC, and as expected, these surgeons have evolved different techniques in the performance of IC. However, they all have several things in common: (1) patient safety is of utmost importance, (2) intracorporeal suturing and knot tying are required skills in the performance of IC, (3) instrumentation is up to the surgeon, and (4) keeping the operative area clean and dry is important. This is the first solely dedicated book to IC. It includes high-quality photographs and video to describe in detail a variety of surgical procedures to demonstrate the performance of IC. All minimally invasive surgeons should strive for IC whenever possible
