Foreword
It is an honour and privilege to write a few words in tribute to my long-time friend and colleague, Professor Bjørn Asheim. We have known one another since the mid-1990s, when his work on industrial districts and learning regions was attracting international attention. We began to interact frequently at international conferences focused on these topics, soon embarking on a long and fruitful working partnership that persisted until I became captive to senior administration and could no longer hold up my end of the bargain. Over these two decades, I had the pleasure (along with my co-editors Gordon Clark and Maryann Feldman) of commissioning and editing Bjørn’s classic chapter on industrial districts for the Oxford Handbook of Economic Geography (published in 2000).
