Preface

It goes without saying that recent developments in the field of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy have been remarkable. GI endoscopy has now become indispensable in both the diagnosis and treatment of GI disorders. Advances in GI endoscopy have been largely the result of cooperation between endoscopists and endoscopic manufacturers in the development of new instruments and new techniques. In Japan, joint academic and industrial research commenced in this field fi in 1957. We, the endoscopists of Japan, have continued to actively promote the development and use of new models and clinical applications, and also have put much effort into education and training. The inaugural Endoscopy Forum Japan (EFJ) was held in August 1999 in Otaru, Hokkaido. Now, in the summer of 2008, it has been 10 years since the fi first EFJ was held.
