Abstract Brown shrimp Penaeus aztecus Ives, 1891 seems to be well adapted in the Ionian Sea since its first occurrence in the coastal zone of the island of Corfu during 2013. In the current work, we present additional new records from Argostoli Gulf (Cephalonia Island), Sagiada Bay (Therspotia, NW Greece) and Mesoggi (Corfu Island), which verify the wider distribution of the species. Moreover, direct contacts with shrimpers in the region, suggested that commercial exploitation of the species has been recently established. Although it poses potential threats to the lucrative caramote shrimp (Penaeus kerathurus) populations, which support the income of the fishing communities in the region, the presence of P. aztecus populations represents a new promising fisheries resource. Introduction Among the invasive Erythrian shrimps (Penaeus pulchricaudatus Stebbing, 1914, Penaeus japonicus Spence Bate, 1888, Penaeus semisulcatus De Haan, 1844, Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius, 1798), Metapenaeus stebbingi Nobili, 1904; Zava et al. 2018), with the recent addition of Penaeus monodon Fabricius, 1798, (Khafage et al. 2019), Penaeus aztecus Ives, 1891 is the most widespread and successful invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea. Penaeus aztecus has been recorded from eight countries around the Mediterranean Sea (i.e. France, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Montenegro, Albania and Turkey) from its first collection off the Antalya Bay during 2009 (Deval et al. 2010) and it has recently entered to the Black Sea (Gönülal and Türetken 2019). Since then, it is expanding progressively, forming in some cases local but dense exploitable populations in Turkey,

Greece and Sicily island (Italy) (Karachle et al. 2017; Kampouris et al. 2018). The presence of P. aztecus in the Ionian Sea was recorded earlier, compared to other marine areas. The earliest record was from Boka Kotorska Bay in Montenegro during September 2013 (Marković et al. 2014), followed by catches off Corfu island during November 2013 (Kapiris and Apostolidis, in Kapiris et al. 2014) and off Kylini (western coast of the Peloponese peninsula) during the period 2014– 2015 (Zenetos and Giavasi, in Crocetta et al. 2015). The species was recently recorded in Vlora Bay in Albania during 2018 and it is also considered as widespread and established in certain coastal
