News in Brief
New Initiatives for Pharma and Biotech The European Union is to launch a new initiative to support the pharmaceutical and biotechnological sector in Europe. Gu¨nter Verheugen (Germany) the EC’s Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, has announced a plan as part of a new policy to develop the overall competitiveness of this sector. The first step will be a consultation with the industry, trades union, EU member states and the European Parliament. The European Commission planes to set up a so called ‘Pharma Forum’ to address the fragmentation of the European pharmaceutical market. The ‘Pharma Forum’s’ activities will focus its attention on R & D issues and existing national regulatory constraints. The members will include ministers from
member states governments, members of the European Parliament, senior representatives of pharma and biotech industry, representatives of patients organisations and health professionals. In parallel, the EU stated autumn last year that it will commission an independent study and costbenefit analysis of biotechnology and genetic engineering to evaluate the economic, social and environmental opportunities of modern biotechnology and bioengineering in Europe. The goal of the study is, to increase public awareness and acceptance of life sciences and biotechnologies. The results – expected in 2007 – shall help to elaborate a new policy framework for R & D and pharma and biotech industry policy over the following 5 years. www.europa.eu.int
