Since desktop publishing technology is very new and may be unfamiliar to some readers, brief comments on how this book was produced may be of interest. The text was 'desktop published' entirely by the author on Macintosh microcomputers, using MacWrite for text, Superpaint for figures, Mac,~xtn for mathematical formulae and ANUGraph for curves of statistical functions. It was output on an Apple Laserwriter Plus laserprinter. The laserwriter output was then used as camera-ready copy for reduction to 80% in final printing by the publishers. The main text is in Times Roman font, and the literature citations in A v a n t G a r d e , while Helvetica is used for annotation on figures and Symbol font (~Ltl30~. (~OVX)for Greek letters.
