The Department of Mathematics of the National Institute for Scientific and Technical Creation organized a
"QpC:!:r'ato:r
with 'rop·ology and Ergodic Theory" held in BU9teni, Romania, August 29 - September 8, 1983. The research contracts between the Mathematics Department of INCREST and the National Council for Science and Technology constituted the generous framework which made possible the organization of tilis conference. The organizing committee consisted of Zoia
head of the department, Grigore
Arsene, Radu Gologan, Mihai Pimsner, Sorin Popa, gerban Stratila and Dan Voiculescu. The main topic of the conference was the recent progress in operator algebras, arising from the use of topological and ergodic theory ideas. The present volume contains the invited adresses and papers contributed by participants accepted on the basis of referees' reports. The volume has been edited by Huzihiro Araki, Calvin C.Moore, Stratila and Dan Voiculescu, benefitting from the Grigore Arsene.
