Foreword: UNESCO’s Response to the Intentional Destruction of Cultural Heritage

The destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan by the Taliban in March 2001 sent shockwaves around the world. It represented a painful loss not only for the people of Afghanistan, but for all of humanity. It reminded us that we all have a role to play in safeguarding these places for the future. Protecting the world’s cultural heritage is at the heart of UNESCO’s mandate.
