Penile abscess following intracavernous injection: case report A 49-year-old man developed a penile abscess after receiving an intracavernous injection of papaverine. The man, who had a history of erectile dysfunction, presented with distal penile shaft swelling 6 months after receiving intracavernous injection of papaverine [dosage not stated]. He reported that the swelling had increased over 2 weeks following the injection but that he had not sought medical treatment for 6 months as he had few symptoms. A tender lump measuring 6cm × 4cm was palpable on the left ventrolateral side of his penis; sonography confirmed a transonic, well-delineated lesion of 30mL volume. The lump was punctured and cultures revealed Klebsiella. The abscess was drained and excised and the man received IV ciprofloxacin. He developed a urethrocutaneous fistula measuring 6mm in diameter on postoperative day 12; it was initially managed by suprapubic cystostomy and later with urethroplasty. The fistula subsequently closed and at follow-up the man showed good functional results. Author comment: "Here, we present a rare case of penile abscess presenting 6 months after intracavernous papaverine injection." Jinga V, et al.
