Paroxetine Acute urticaria: case report
A 31-year-old woman developed acute urticaria during treatment with paroxetine for major depressive disorder. The woman presented to an outpatient clinic with symptoms of unhappiness, insomnia, anhedonia, loss of appetite, malaise, reduced concentration and weakness for four months. Following evaluation, she was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Hence, her treatment was started with paroxetine 10 mg/day [route not stated]. However, on day 3 of paroxetine treatment, she presented to the dermatology outpatient clinic with complaints of swelling and generalized pruritus. Subsequently, she was admitted. Examinations were notable for oedematous and reddened skin. She also developed itchy areas on her arms and legs. Laboratory tests showed normal complete blood count, renal function tests, ESR, CRP and urinalysis. She was diagnosed with paroxetine-induced acute urticaria which was confirmed with Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale assessment that showed a possible relationship between paroxetine and the acute urticaria. Therefore, the woman’s paroxetine therapy was stopped, and her treatment was started with unspecified antihistamine and methylprednisolone. Her symptoms resolved within 48 hours. Subsequently, she started receiving escitalopram for underlying major depressive disorder. Tuman T, et al. Acute urticaria associated with paroxetine.
