Doctors, lawyers, and others concerned with child protection ask similar questions and seek similar answers: what is the nature of harm done, if physical abuse, the force required for a given injury and the reaction of the child in the aftermath? Does the account provided fit with the injuries observed and the developmental stage of the child? Is the cause on balance likely to arise from accident, intention, or an underlying medical condition? Cross-examination in Court is a robust form of clinical governance where the clinicians’ evidence is tested with time to reconsider crucial opinions on which may rest the residence of a child, or custodial sentence for an alleged perpetrator. The highest standards of analysis are required based on medical experience, evidence-­ based medicine and a comprehensive analysis of the international literature. Medical assessments should reflect those high standards so that an abused child is not returned home, carers of a child with an accidental injury are not falsely accused or that a child with a condition
