Personalized health care is an emerging concept that has gained considerable momentum in recent years. It is a system of care that proposes shifting the focus of care from disease management to disease prevention and health management, with a greater emphasis on prevention, risk assessment, and preemptive intervention. The future dental practice environment will no doubt place much more emphasis on disease prevention and on assessing disease risk. New technologies will provide dentists with greater capabilities to predict early disease onset and minimize disease progression and thus initiate treatment earlier that it is more cost-effective. This concept of personalized health care will have a transformative effect on the oral health-care system. If dentistry is to be part of this new health-care environment, future practitioners must be able to utilize the most up-to-date technologies that will enable risk assessment and facilitate the creation of a personalized health plan for their patients. Many of these new technologies designed to aid in point-of-care decisions about disease risk or early diagnoses are evolving rapidly and reflect technological and knowledge-driven advances in genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics.
