Various toxicities: case report A 24-year-old woman ingested 120 phenobarbital 60mg tablets (7.2g total dose) and subsequently was admitted in a coma with hypotension, hypothermia, oliguria and respiratory insufficiency with areflexia [time to reaction onset not stated]. Arterial blood gas analysis was consistent with respiratory acidosis and type 2 respiratory failure. EEG revealed diffused 5-Hz theta activity. Her phenobarbital concentration at admission was >80µg/L. She was transferred to the ICU, and her stomach content was aspirated. She received fluids, ventilation, charcoal, antibacterials and haemoperfusion. After 48 hours, she regained consciousness, and was subsequently weaned off ventilation and inotropic support. She was discharged 9 days after admission, once her EEG normalised and her phenobarbital concentration was undetectable. Patil VC, et al.
