The pilonidal sinus disease of the coccyx area is common. However, its etiology and treatment remains debated. The surgical treatment chosen must meet three criteria: (1) rapid healing, (2) a low rate of recurrence, and (3) minimal cost.

Preface

In the Preface to the First Edition we raised the claim that proctology was no longer a minor specialty. In the ensuing nine years, a host of new developments have kept this surgical specialty a field of excitement and innovation. A second edition was called for by the need to update our knowledge base and incorporate recent developments and technologies, especially those concerning colonic diseases.
