Vaccine failure: 24 case reports In a prospective, multicentre study conducted in Spain, involving paediatric patients vaccinated between 01 January 2012 and 30 June 2016, 24 children (16 boys and 8 girls) aged 9–58 months were described, who exhibited vaccine failure following administration of pneumococcal 13-valent CRM197-vaccine conjugate for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). The children received one to four doses of pneumococcal 13-valent CRM197-vaccine conjugate between 2012 and 2016 [dosage and route not stated]. The children were aged 2–30 months at the time of vaccination. Out of the 24 children, 17 children completed their scheduled vaccinations, while for the remaining 7 children, the vaccination schedule could not be completed. At the age of 9–58 months, the children exhibited vaccine failure and were admitted due to development of IPD (complicated pneumonia 21 children; complicated pneumonia, bacteraemic mastoiditis and osteoarticular infection 1 child each). IPD was diagnosed using PCR test in 19 childern, culture test in 3 children and both culture and PCR in 2 children. Pneumonia was caused by serotype-19A in five children, serotype-3 in sixteen children and 1, 6B and 14 in one child each. Following unspecified treatment, one child each developed sequelae in the form of bronchopleural fistula, hydrocephalus and pneumatocele, while 21 children were cured. Hernandez S, et al.
