About the Authors

Tomas Hellstrom has a PhD in Theory of Science and Research from Gothenburg University in Sweden. He has written on risk and organization as well as on the management of knowledge in large enterprises. For the last two years he has been located at the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, where he has been working with among others the Swedish Rescue Agency, The Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research (FRN), and the Swedish insurance company Ldnsforsdkringsgruppen. Merle Jacob is Associate Professor at Chalmers University of Technology. She has a PhD in Theory of Science and Research from Gothenburg University, and has conducted research on innovation and product development as well as on technology and sustainable development.

Preface

The discourse on risk has undergone many facelifts in the recent decades. On a political level it has gone from technocratic dreams of comprehensive risk assessment and risk communication schemes, often underpinned by fault-tree models and risk perception studies, to post-modem, culturally infused approaches to risk which are sensitised to multiple interpretations and contested expert domains. These views on risk co-exist and co-evolve. In many respects this book is a result of such parallel developments and of the analytical tensions they have created, both for academics and for policy makers.
