Polymer Solar Cells for Indoor Energy Harvesting Yoichi Aoki ROHM Co.,Ltd, 21 Saiin Mizosaki-cho, Ukyo-ku Kyoto 615-8585, Japan ABSTRACT Polymer solar cell (PSC) has great spectrum matching with the room lights and PSC has great photovoltaic performance under the low to high illuminance compared to other types of solar cells. So, we fabricate the PSC module for the indoor use and investigate the electrical characteristics under the various light sources. The PSC photovoltaic performance is 43.5μW/cm2 under the fluorescent light 1000lux (0.1mW/cm2) and PCE=6.0% under the sunlight (1SUN-100mW/cm2). This PSC module has practical durability and stability against the heat and light exposure. So, PSC is used as the self-charging batteries for mobile devices and wireless sensor networks. Keyword: polymer solar cells, indoor application, energy harvester INTRODUCTION Polymer solar cell (PSC) has the ultra-thin 200nm organic layer as the photovoltaic absorber. This layer is processed from the material ink solution by printing techniques. So, PSC is expected as the low-cost capable solar cell. But, the low photovoltaic performance and poor durability of PSC are important issues to be solved. Currently, the donor-type polymer innovation improves PSC’s photovoltaic performance under the sunlight. However, PSC does not have enough power for the outdoor compared to other type of solar cells because the organic material does not have absorption against the near-infrared light. On the other hand, PSC has good spectral match with the visible light like the fluorescent light or LEDs which has only the visible spectrum (Fig1). So, PSC is expected as the self-charging battery of the mobile devices or the energy harvester of the wireless sensor networks for indoor application [1,2]. Solar light 䠖 100mW/cm2

EXPERIMENT The PSC cell consists of a solution-processed organic layer as the absorber sandwiched with ITO and metal electrode on the glass substrate. And PSC cell is covered with inorganic passivation by the chemical vapor deposition to avoid exposure from the oxygen and moisture in a general atmospheric environment.
