Preparing the Youth for the Storm: Deepening the Discourse Around the Youth and CCA in SIDS
Abstract
This chapter presents a summary of the outcomes of the research study and proposed actions/recommendations for adaptation strategies to enhance the capacity and resilience of the youth in small island communities to adapt to climate change in the future. It explores the issues about the implementation of the conceptual framework, the contribution of the research to the global body of knowledge and the need for future research. Section “Theme 1: Exploring the Vulnerability of the Youth in SIDS Communities” of this chapter discusses the outcomes of the research, specifically relating to the impact of climate change and the issues relating to strategies to building the adaptive capacity of youth in small island communities to adapt to the impact of climate change. It explores the effectiveness and challenges of using top-down and bottom-up approaches and actions to be implemented to ensure that youth acquire the appropriate knowledge, skills and livelihoods to enable them to build resilience to adapt to climate change. Section “Theme 2: An Assessment of the Skills and Knowledge Required to Build the Resilience of the Youth to the Impacts of Climate Change” of this chapter conveys the theoretical contribution of the study to the global body of knowledge, the limitation of
the new conceptual framework, the opportunities that are presented for future research and the recommendations to building youth resilience to the impact of climate change in the future. Keywords

Globally, the youth are already experiencing the severe impact of climate change daily. Throughout the book, we have explored the knowledge deficit between that which is known and that which is necessary for young people in SIDS to enhance their resilience to climate change. This chapter is divided into two sections. Section “Theme 1: Exploring the Vulnerability of Youth in SIDS Communities” discusses fundamental challenges relating to building the strength of young people in SIDS to adapt to the impact of climate change and other development calamities, while Section “Theme 2: An Assessment of the Skills and Knowledge Required to Build the Resilience of the Youth to the Impacts of Climate Change” presents a summary of contributions that will build the global body of knowledge on the youth
