Springer Fatigue Book Wins Texty Award The Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA) has chosen the Springer book Fatigue of Structures and Materials, by Jaap Schijve, as the recipient of the 2010 TAA ‘‘Texty’’ Textbook Excellence Award. The award was presented on 26 June 2010 during the TAA Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fatigue of Structures and Materials, now in its second edition, is primarily a textbook written for those working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials associated with design, predictions, load spectra, and experimental verifications. The first edition of this book was well received and has been used extensively in various courses at universities and technical colleges as well as in industries and at research institutes. A CD-ROM has been added to the second edition and is a valuable tool for a new generation of students. For more information: www.springer.com/engineering/ mechanical+eng/book/978.
deformation theory, including that of its major contributors along with many of their photographs. Deformation theory is applied to problems of beam bending; a thick spherical shell under internal pressure and heating; plastic buckling of bars, plates, and shells (deformation theory leads to more accurate buckling load predictions than incremental theory); and plastic thermal buckling of bars and plates with temperature-dependent nonlinear isotropic material properties. Finally, a totalenergy approach is developed to treat the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of particulate and fiber-reinforced composite materials. The resulting material model is used to analyze the thermal-stress disk test for particulate graphite composite materials, the off-axis loading and buckling behavior of laminated fiber-reinforced composite materials, and the off-axis loading of carbon-carbon composite materials. Theoretical predictions are compared with available experiments to assess the validity of the theory. Book Explores Deformation Theory of Plasticity Deformation Theory of Plasticity, by Robert M. Jones, is useful for determining and understanding the state of deformation before fracture of isotropic and composite materials with highly nonlinear stress-strain curves. Deformation theory is simpler and more useful than incremental theory for proportional and near-proportional loading problems. Moreover, deformation theory is often used as a first approximation to a solution for nonproportional loading problems. The author includes the history of
