Good riddance. I would like to thank my colleagues in the Sociology Department at Trinity College Dublin. They provided useful feedback on some of the early ideas contained herein. I would also like to thank Mary Gilmartin and Jane Gray at Maynooth University for talking through the project with me. I am grateful too to Lynn Staeheli for her ongoing guidance and support of my academic work. Thanks are also due to several friends whose good company and occasional wise words made the last year bearable. I’m thinking here of Killian Foley, Jules Hackett, Paddy Cahill, Paddy O’ Dea, Mick Quinn, John Kerrigan, Irial Glynn, Jane O’ Sullivan and James Hanrahan. I’m also thinking of Tony Tracy, Anne Reid, Luke Daly, Keith Elliot, Sarah O’ Brien, Dann
