Preface

A mechanical piece of equipment of a given design and size should satisfactorily endure its intended operation for a period of time that becomes longer under smaller loads and speeds, by the nature of things. Therefore, it would seem that the attributes of durability and performance density are conflicting or competitive design objectives. It might even seem that they are mutually exclusive ones. This book explores the endeavors of the mechanical engineering community over a century or so, regarding the design for durability and the design for performance density, which endeavors have mostly been made without such connotations. It contains suggested as well as real-life examples of application of the principles and practices of mechanical design towards achieving these goals hence also examples of the so-called design pitfalls. Some of these examples might be regarded as ad hoc cases, by necessity, but they may enhance design thinking along similar lines.
