am indebted both to George Wheeler, Dean of the College of
Liberal Arts at Temple, whose financial support made the conference possible, and to Leon Steinberg, Chairman of the Mathematics Department, who made himself and his office available to me in the planning stages and during the hectic days of the conference itself. I am aware as well that a good many members of the Mathematics Department performed a number of thoughtful services during the conference, often without being asked, sometimes without my knowledge.
My thanks to all of these colleagues.
The responsibility for the typing and final preparation of the manuscript was placed in the most capable hands of Ms. Gerry Sizemore, Administrative Assistantl Supervisor of the Mathematics Department. In this she was ably assisted by Donna Sowell and Patricia Libbey.
Even a casual perusal of the volume reveals the
excellence of their work, their patient, painstaking attention to detail in the preparation of the articles, many of which present formidable difficulties to the typist. Finally, I must thank my wife Josephine for her continued support and encouragement in whatever I undertake.
