European Science Foundation The Programme of European Research Conferences is run by the European Science Foundation, mostly with funding from the Euroconferences Activity of the European Union. The Programme is open to all researchers, both from industry and academia, and covers all fields, from natural and technical sciences to social sciences and humanities. Grants are available to encourage the attendance of young researchers, in particular those from less favoured regions in Europe. Information on our conferences can also be obtained on our World Wide Web server at: http: \\www.esf.org. The deadline for applications is generally about 3 months before a

First Louis Pasteur Conference on Infectious Diseases ("Genetics of the Susceptibility to Infectious Diseases")
Institut Pasteur, Paris, France, October 21-23, 1996 Organizers: Louis H. Miller, Chairman (National Institutes of Health), Michel Brahic (Institut Pasteur), Marc Fellous (Institut Pasteur) and Emil Skanlene (McGill University). The Institut Pasteur is launching a new series of international conferences: the Louis Pasteur Conferences on Infectious Diseases. implications for the future of the field. These conferences wilt be held in the fall, in the recently opened Center for Scientific Information of the Institut Pasteur. The first Louis Pasteur Conference on Infectious Diseases will deal with the "Genetics of the Susceptibility to Infectious Diseases". Recent advances in mammalian genetics have made it possible to locate, and in some cases to identify, genes which control the susceptibility to a particular infectious agent. Most of this information has been acquired by studying model infections of the mouse. However, important results have also been obtained regarding infections of man. In the near future, it will be possible to screen the entire human genome in search of multiple genes controlling the susceptibility to a specific infection and the pathogenesis of the disease caused by a particular microorganism. This conference will bring together mammalian geneticists, immunologists and microbiologists who have made important contributions to the field. The speakers will review the latest develo
