Mild post-treatment haemolysis following off-label treatment: case report In a retrospective study involving 19 children of African origin with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, who received treatment with artesunate between 2010 and 2018 at a hospital in Italy, a 6-year-old boy was described who developed mild posttreatment haemolysis following off-label treatment with artesunate for the Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The boy with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, started receiving off-label treatment with IV artesunate [dose administered not stated]. The first three doses were administered every 12 hours, which was followed by a once daily dosing. Concomitantly, he received quinine. Subsequent parasite clearance was noted with full recovery. However, 8 days after the initiation of artesunate therapy, he developed mild post-treatment haemolysis not requiring blood transfusions. Venturini E, et al.
