Calcium-gluconate Calcinosis cutis due to extravasation: case report A 20-days-old male neonate developed calcinosis cutis due to extravasation of calcium gluconate [therapeutic indication not stated]. The neonate was presented to the emergency department due to right leg swelling over the past 10 days. His physical examination showed skin redness along with swelling of the right lower leg and the right foot. X-rays of right leg and right foot showed cutaneous calcification. Upon reviewing his medical record, it was found that he had hospitalised for pneumonia, and during that hospitalisation, there was extravasation of calcium gluconate infusion [dosage not stated] at the dorsum of his right foot. He was diagnosed with calcinosis cutis attributed extravasation of calcium gluconate [duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. The neonate was treated conservatively. At three months follow-up, the swelling had resolved. Author comment: "Calcium gluconate is frequently used in the neonatal age group to correct hypocalcemia which if extravasated can lead to calcinosis cutis." Rashid M, et al.
