Can You Identify the Microstructure?

Describe the microstructure accurately and win an invitation to submit your own “Mystery Micrograph.” The micrograph above is a backscatter electron image. The bottom material is copper, the upper is graphite. What is the bonding layer? The winner’s name and answer will appear in an upcoming issue. Exceptional micrographs from winner submittals may be used on the journal cover.

Send your clear, brief description by e-mail to the MMA editor at [email protected]. Entries should be titled: “MMA Mystery Micro 9(5).” The above micrograph was submitted by Dina V. Dudina, Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry SB RAS, Novosibirsk, Russia.

Answer for Volume 9, Issue 3 Mystery Micrograph

Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis

This micrograph is from a nail from a house built in Minnesota around 1880. It was pulled from the wooden structure during a remodeling project. The 100× image as taken with a Reichert MeF3 metallograph using interference contrast after etching in 2% nital. The Full Cross Section image was taken with a Keyence VHX-7000 using automating stitching. The original image is about 20,000 by 2000 pixels. Teri Harrington, Automotive Product Research Technician, ArcelorMittal Global R&D East Chicago Labs, responded with the first correct guess.
