5 Delivering Great Work If there is one thing that has allowed me to be successful as an online service provider, it is this: I always deliver my work on time. That might sound overly simple, but you would be surprised how many people working online don’t do this. This is a sentiment that I hear echoed by clients all the time, and it’s the reason I’ve become indispensable to several organizations I work with. Having tried to hire writers and programmers myself, I know just how flaky many people are who work on the Web. It’s all too easy to stop answering your e-mails when there’s a job you are running behind on (or that turns out to be harder than you thought). When you don’t have to face an angry client in person, it’s much easier sending off a quick e-mail to tell them their work will arrive late. And that’s fine. It happens. But if you let it happen a few times, it will get to the point where those organizations feel they can’t trust you and that they can’t rely on you. That in turn means that they can’t consider you for those big projects that would help to further your career, and it means that they’re not going to recommend you to their own business partners. On the other hand, if you’re the kind of provider who delivers work on time, every time, then companies won’t want to let you go. Better yet, some companies might come to rely on you to such an extent that their business couldn’t operate without you. This then puts the balance of power firmly in your court (apologies for the mixed metaphors there), which in turn means you can start picking and choosing projects, influencing the direction of the business, and increasing your rates. You want to become indispensable, and that means being reliable first and foremost. Being reliable comes down to being able to work quickly and efficiently. And that’s a pretty important skill for a whole host of other reasons too. Of course, the faster you can work (without sacrificing quality), the more you can earn and/or the earlier you can clock off. In fact, if you can churn out huge amounts of work while remaining absolutely focused, you’ll gain a huge advantage over the competition. This chapter will show you how.
Why Focus Matters If you are working as a freelancer from home, then this has many advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes those advantages and disadvantages essential boil down to the same thing. For instance, you probably love being able to set your own work pace and being in an environment of your choosing. Great advantage, right? Well, yeah, except it can also be a disadvantage. Of course, the challenge now is actually working when you’re meant to be,
