Preface

Housing is among the most vulnerable sectors to natural disasters in Vietnam. Recent cyclones and floods have generated critical impacts on local housing and settlements in this country, particularly in the central part where most of natural disasters happened in this country are situated. Post-disaster housing reconstruction in this region, the Central Vietnam, has a close link with the stability and resilience of households and communities in which opportunities to build resilience can be identified and met by reconstruction efforts. This study, therefore, examined the resilience of housing though the lens of post-disaster housing with a focus on three key themes for developing disaster-resilient housing: (i) community consultation, (ii) the role of built-environment professionals and (iii) design responses for resilience. The key goal of this book is to identify which issues or factors can inform and shape the resilience of residential housing against natural disasters in Central Vietnam and how building design interventions can interact and assist the achievement of housing resilience.
