Equilibrium Phases in 304L Stainless Steel Obtained by Sputter-Deposition S. D. DAHLGREN X - r a y and m a g n e t i c data showed that s p u t t e r - d e p o s i t s of 304L s t a i n l e s s s t e e l made at t e m p e r a t u r e s f r o m I~ to a s high a s 500~ c o n t a i n e d f e r r i t e . F e r r i t e n o r m a l l y does not form in 304L s t a i n l e s s s t e e l without s u b z e r o t e m p e r a t u r e t r e a t m e n t o r s e v e r e d e f o r m a t i o n below about 80~ e v e n though the bcc p h a s e is c a l c u l a t e d to b e s t a b l e to a p p r o x i m a t e l y 340~ The p h a s e s o b t a i n e d suggest that s p u t t e r - d e p o s i t i o n can be u s e d to d e t e r m i n e the low t e m p e r a t u r e r e g i o n s of phase d i a g r a m s . The d e p o s i t s contained the bcc phase for s u b s t r a t e t e m p e r a t u r e s below 375*C, fcc a n d bcc p h a s e s b e t w e e n 37 5~ and 500~ and the fcc p h a s e at 800~ An u n i d e n t i f i e d , but a p p a r e n t l y stable p h a s e w a s also p r o d u c e d at 500 ~ and 800~ The t w o - p h a s e deposits had e q u i axed g r a i n s and h i g h e r h a r d n e s s (750 Dph) t h a n the s i n g l e - p h a s e bcc d e p o s i t s (
