First report of thrombosis?: case report A 44-year-old man received a heart transplant and was doing well 6 years later. His immunosuppressive regimen was changed from ciclosporin to everolimus [dosage not stated] and, 2 months later, his condition rapidly deteriorated [age at reaction onset not clearly stated]. His New York Heart Association class declined from class I to class III-IV, and a 5.5cm right atrial tumour mass was observed on echocardiography. MRI findings were suggestive of thrombus formation. The tumour was resected and thrombosis was histologically confirmed. He was receiving phenprocoumon and was in good clinical condition on discharge 9 days after surgery. Author comment: "An increased risk of thrombus formation under immunosuppressive treatment with everolimus has not been reported in literature so far, but it can not be ruled out completely as a cause for the thrombus in this case." ¨ et al. Huge right atrial thrombus 6 years after heart transplantation. Sezer O, 801100663 Annals of Thoracic Surgery 85: 343, No. 1, Jan 2008 - Germany

» Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase, Medline and Embase did not reveal any previous case reports of thrombosis associated with everolimus. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions database contained one report of thrombosis associated with everolimus.
