Explanatory Note IN the December 1967 issue of Transactions Quarterly, ASM launched a reprint series of Metallurgical Classics with the objective of providing students, historians, and metallurgists ready access to these classic papers, together with a scholarly appraisal of each paper and a biographical sketch of the author. This issue contains the fifth item in the series: the first systematic study of the effects of annealing metals after cold work. With succeeding additions to the series, we hope further to illustrate the diversity of journals, national origins and personalities that have been associated with the significant contributions to the advancement of metallurgical science and technology.
