As a result of rapid technological change and streamlined educational programs, contemporary academe is increasingly characterized by ever-narrowing specializations. Therefore the breadth of the scholarly record achieved by Marvin B. Sussman, to whom we dedicate this book, is most notable. On the cutting edge of ideas, Professor Sussman has confronted the new, untried and controversial viewpoints, and challenged the tried and hackneyed. The authors of Family and Support Systems across the Life Span are colleagues, collaborators in research, and former (or present) students. The chapters, which share a common thread-the intricate intertwining of the family and support systems throughout the life cycle--can be grouped into three themes. This volume opens with two previously published articles by Professor Sussman which provide a foundation and linkage with the chapters that follow. "The Isolated Nuclear Family: Fact or Fiction," published in 1959, alerted family scholars to the pitfalls of unquestioningly accepting superficial dictum such as industrialization and the trend towards nuclear family units produces the dissolution of extended kin ties. The second article, "Law and Legal Systems: The Family Connection," was the address he presented when honored with the Burgess Award. This article illustrates the numerous ways in which laws and the legal system impact on families and the need for family scholars to consider these implications when formulating theory and research problems.
