Violence against LGBTQ+ persons is a pervasive and serious problem. As the violence unfolds within cultural contexts, it is infused with misunderstandings, stereotypes, and biases that serve to convince perpetrators of interpersonal and systemic violence that their prejudice, discrimination, and abuse are justified and acceptable. Some institutions have adopted discriminatory policies which limit the human rights of LGBTQ+ persons and contribute to the problem of violence against LGBTQ+ persons. Even in cases where treatment facilities have adopted policies that prohibit discrimination, misinformed persons may act in accordance with personal biases and prejudices as opposed to policy mandated inclusion and affirmation and in doing so, increase, rather than amel
