Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism: 12 case reports In a retrospective, single-institution study of 467 patients underwent craniotomy at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center from 2009 to 2012, 12 patients (5 men and 7 women) aged 38–77 years were described, who developed deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) following treatment with haemostatic agent gelatin/thrombin. The patients had intracranial meningiomas, and for its resection, they underwent craniotomy. As haemostatic agent all patients received a single package of gelatin/thrombin [FloSeal] 10mL at the start of each craniotomy [route not stated]. The surgery was uneventful, only one patient had prolonged intubation due to poor neurologic status. However, following the use of haemostatic agent, the patients developed thromboembolic events such as DVT and PE. These thromboembolic events were attributed to haemostatic agent i.e. gelatin/thrombin [time to reactions onset and outcomes not stated]. Safaee M, et al.
