Definitions Happiness: In the growing world of infrastructure, technology, advanced artificial intelligence, etc., people are neglecting the prime importance, that is, the happiness of people. The concept of the happy city is taken in the form of masking the infrastructure, which will focus on the emotional stability and wellbeing of the people living in the area. The concept of happiness is taken as the life when you feel happy and cannot help but smile, and live in a satisfactory manner.
Introduction Cities can be good or bad in terms of their impact on residents. There are cities which are considered the best places to live. There are cities, which have excellent infrastructure, cleanliness, and amenities for comfort and convenience of the residents. Urban planning and administration has now become a very important part of governance. Rising urban population has made it necessary for
governments to allocate greater resources towards urban infrastructure and management. Modern technologies help in monitoring of urban life and help in maintaining pollution under control. Researchers have been trying to study cities for a long time. Even in 1939, we had a book on the science of happy cities, which presented characteristics of good cities and characteristics relating to group behavior (see: Thorndike 1939). Today quality of urban life (QOUL) is conducted on cities to identify their livability. A large number of studies, rankings, and ratings are published every year, which are based on QUOL data (Stimson et al. 2011). Due to economic reasons, there is very high increase in population in large cities. However, rural areas located near these large cities are also experiencing increase in population. Modern means of communication and transportation has transformed urban life and made easier for people to live in outer areas (Steines and Fisher 1974). Society knows a very little about what makes us happy and how we thrive. Happiness and positive approach towards life are dependent on many factors including surroundings. The studies on happiness can be applied in designing cities, so that people are happiers and societies can thrive. Studies of psychology, sociology, economics, and all other disciplines can be converged into one field – the field of creating happiness for the people. Cities are one of the greatest developments by mankind. They help mankind in advancement.
