Health-Related Quality of Life in Prisoners

Abstract: High infection prevalence, substance use and psychiatric disorders among prisoners represent a significant community health issue. Prisoners have poorer quality of life compared to the general population, and their impairment in quality of life may relate to the poor social and demographic factors in addition to the multiple physical and mental health problems. This may also reflect the incarceration of individuals with established impairment in quality of life and/or a specific impact of incarceration on quality of life. Further longitudinal research is required to examine the short- and long-term effects of incarceration on the quality of life of prisoners. It is also important to examine the effects of treating treatable diseases on quality of life in prison settings.
