Hyperglycaemia in a patient with diabetes mellitus: case report A 42-year-old woman developed hyperglycaemia after long-term use of hydrocortisone cream. The woman was referred in March 2009 with poor glycaemic control. She had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus in 2003, and had been well-controlled on metformin until a year before presentation. Gliclazide had been added in 2008 with no improvement in glycaemic control. A detailed history revealed that she had been using 1% hydrocortisone for the past year [frequency not stated]. A short course of the cream had been prescribed a year earlier for dermatitis, but she had continued using it, obtaining it over-the-counter. Hydrocortisone was discontinued and the woman’s HbA1c improved over the following 6 months. Nayak A, et al. An unusual cause for deterioration of glycaemia in diabetes.
