Preface
The healthcare field has moved decidedly toward the integration of behavioral health services that are empirically supported, trauma-informed, and recovery- oriented. In integrated care, behavioral health and primary care professionals work collaboratively with clients to provide evidence-based health, mental health, and addiction interventions in a coordinated, systematic, and cost-effective manner. Behavioral health professionals provide screening, assessment, and interventions designed to prevent, detect, and address mental illness, addiction, and health conditions induced or exacerbated by trauma, stress, and economic disadvantage. Integrating behavioral health services with health services can increase access to behavioral healthcare by co-locating primary care and behavioral healthcare professionals in the same setting. This can increase ease of access to care and reduce the burdens that can interfere with patients’ ability to follow-up on treatment recommendations.
