Abstract. In this paper, we have designed a custom communication model for IoT devices on its edges to induce intelligence in the retail sector. Wireless technologies, such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), NFC (Near Field Communication), needed BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), and LPWAN (LowPower Wide-Area Network), etc. were delegated to perform various tasks within the available services. We introduce Smart Shop (SmSH) architecture that integrates features of context-aware services, platform independent, edge computing and proximity sensing to establish seamless connectivity for the customer entrusted tasks. This architecture should encompass the M2M communication devices and gateways which are generally connected to the cloud environment to establish meaningful communication in commercial IoT applications. Our architecture has been proposed primarily for the retail sector and can be extended easily to other domains by altering the required functionalities, device types and services. 1 Introduction The current shopping scenario has shifted to online stores instead of traditional brick and mortar stores, which in some ways downgrades the shopping experience. Visiting physical stores provide some basic advantages to the customers. They let customers touch and feel the product that they are buying, be it clothes, fruits or vegetables. Shopping is also a weekend getaway for many families. It comes as a long breather after a hectic week at work. However, despite its many advantages, many of the shopping malls in various parts of the world are dying due to a change in the socioeconomic structure and often exhibit a high vacancy rate [1]. In order to stay alive, malls must be more customer-friendly and must bring out more innovation in marketing to attract the customers. Malls must provide a customized value proposition to the customers instead of a one size fits all approach as in practice currently. Customers visiting shops these days look for various experiences not limited to shopping alone. In order to provide this, the mall has to refocus on digital transformation so as to cater to the changes associated with the application of digital technology in all areas of © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019 K. shopping malls. This can be done with the implementation of beacons, near field communication devices, microcontrollers, sensors, etc. in shopping centers. Physical retailers can attract more consumers into their stores with the use of IoT devices and sensors. These devices and sensors help the retailers to increase their profits while the customer benefits by the reduced
