The book Knowledge and Politics 1 analyzes a fundamental problem of contemporary society: how government and political institutions deal with knowledge. This problem encompasses many disciplinary approaches from epistemology to social sciences. How can we represent knowledge? Are there rational criteria to distinguish different kinds of knowledge? What kind of knowledge should be used by governments? Are political institutions using knowledge in the proper way? Is politics influencing the normative values inside the community dedicated to the production of knowledge? And so on ... The relationship between knowledge and politics is one of the main questions facing contemporary democracy. Riccardo Viale in his article "Truth, Science, and Politics: an Analysis of Social Epistemology" undertakes an epistemological assessment of the contemporary science-politics system. There are different ways of analyzing this relationship. Viale suggests using social epistemology to assess the ability of the science-politics system to improve or to weaken the rate of growth of knowledge in science and of using the best knowledge in public policy decisions.
