Utility ****
This 5th edition of a known textbook of critical care has changed. The most important addition is that the book can be purchased as an e-book. On their website, not only the book but also multiple references can be assessed. These references are constantly updated. This is a unique and unprecedented development. I can imagine that many of us who would like to have at least one or two door stoppers on our shelves, but we all have become weary in plowing through them by hand and getting frustrated by finding that little nugget needed to understand a critical care problem. Thus an online edition with a research option is very useful. The book’s organization includes a section with common problems, basic signs, and multiple sections going through the systems. There are multiple sections not only on specific situations such as the obstetric patient but also topics in toxicology, procedures and much needed ethical and end-of-life issues. There is also an interesting section on organization management and education.
I believe this is a very useful book, particularly to prepare for the Neurocritical Care Qualification examination. The book is over 2,000 pages, but it reads like a novel. The price is appropriate for such a work. I believe this book truly stands out among the other excellent medical and surgical critical care texts, and that is no small accomplishment because the competition is fierce. I recommend purchasing this book and read it from cover to cover.
Style **** The book is extremely well edited. This is not only because most of the authors are established avatars in the field but also chapters cowritten by fellows are clear and to the point. There is very little overlap which is, I believe, a major feat of this book. The central nervous systems section is well done and includes the major topics in adult and pediatric neurointensive care.
