MORE FIRMS ADDED TO MRS EQUIPMENT SHOW The Materials Research Society Equipment Show is expanding rapidly, as more manufacturers become aware of the unequaled opportunity to exhibit their services and products to our membership. The Show will be held in concert with the Annual Meeting, to be held at the Boston Marriott Hotel/Copley Plaza Nov. 26-30. Last year's meeting attracted more than 1,600 materials scientists, engineers, and technologists, and judging from the Society's recent rate of growth, this year's conference will attract a significantly larger number. Organized by AIP The Show is being organized by the American Institute of Physics. Exhibitors will display the latest in analytical and processing equipment of particular interest to participants in the Society's technical symposia. Although this is the first such exhibition the MRS has sponsored, the number of manufacturers who have already indicated they will participate is great. Ordinarily such shows take several years to become established, and the fact ours has come together so swiftly and so completely is evidence of the growing significance of the study of materials, as well as of the ability and enthusiasm of those in the Society and the AIP who have cooperated in organizing it. Space Still Available Show facilities are superb, and ample space is available for interested exhibitors. MRS PEOPLE AT GENERAL MOTORS, Thompson M. Sloane has been appointed assistant head of the Physical Chemistry Department at the Research Laboratories. He was most recently senior staff research scientist and leader of the Physical Chemistry gas phase kinetics research group. He joined General Motors in 1973. With a doctorate in physical chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloane's research interests include combustion chemistry, including reactions involving fuel-bound nitrogen, flame quenching, and, most recently, ignition and combustion enhancement. Sloane received GM's John M. Campbell Award in 1983 for his contributions to the understanding of elementary combustion reactions. Besides the MRS, he is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Combustion Institute, and Sigma Xi.
