National Center of Excellence for Clinical Trials and Research at National Taiwan University Hospital
The 21st century is the dawn of an era in which we are witnessing much more rapid communication between basic and clinical research within medicine. Researchers and physicians these days are expected to integrate the knowledge of their domain’s basic research into clinical practice in an ever more effective manner. The National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), which started operations in 1895 and currently serves approximately 2,000 inpatients and 7,000 outpatients daily, is the best-known and most highly renowned medical center in Taiwan. As a prominent medical center in Taiwan and the Asia Pacific region, NTUH is committed to this trend because it hopes to develop better treatments. The National Center of Excellence for Clinical Trials and Research (NCTRC) was established in 2007 to fulfill this goal. The mission of this new NTUH unit is to foster more innovative, high-impact clinical trials and to streamline drug development activities,as well as to attract the best new experimental drugs for testing in Taiwanese patients. The central purpose of the NCTRC, under the project Taiwan: A Biomedical Technology Island of the Executive Yuan, Republic of China (Taiwan), is to coordinate multidisciplinary research, conduct stateof-the-art clinical research, assume leadership in clinical research within the Asian region, and integrate medical centers
